History:
Hawaiʻi was the home island of Kamehameha the Great who by 1795 had united most of the Hawaiian Islands under his rule after several years of warfare and conquest. He gave his kingdom the name of his native island, which all the islands are now known as, Hawaiʻi. Captain James Cook who made the Western world aware of these "Sandwich isles", was killed on Hawaiʻi.
Need more? Here’s what you can be doing this weekend if you were going to be there:
Swimming in a waterfall pool At the end of the road going into Waipio (when a river blocks your path), park and walk up the river along the scarce trail two miles to the bottom of the falls. Complete seclusion allows for an enchanting swim at the base of the 100 ft. falls.
End of Alii At the south end of Alii Dr., where it dead ends, take the path and go anywhere from 1-5 miles hiking along the ocean. This is completely unknown, and the underwater scene is fantastic. It is a wonderful place to escape from Kona within minutes.
White Road Take White Road on the north side of Mamalahoa Hwy. after leaving Waimea traveling east. At the top of the road, take the 2 mile trail to the top back of Waipio valley. The hike is among bamboo and jungle, and the views at the end are astounding.
